X-WL2K-CMS-Inquiry-Server: Detroit Inquiry Processor Version=1.1.0 X-WL2K-Downloaded-From: ftp://winlink.org/Help/Photo.txt at 2006/02/03 17:14 (UTC) How to create smaller picture files with Microsoft Photo Editor: First, make a copy of your hi-res original picture, with a different name, so there is no chance of overwriting the original. (We're assuming JPEG picture files from a digital camera, typically a few hundred kilobytes and too big for sending via Pactor). Then start Microsoft Photo Editor and open the new copy. Then crop the picture as needed: Click the "Select" tool button (dotted rectangle), drag a selection box on the image, right-click inside the box and select "Crop". (Use Edit/Undo if you don't like the results). Next, select File/Properties from the menu, and change resolution to 72 (or thereabouts- this is the approxamate resolution of a computer screen). Now select Image/Resize, you will see some rediculous dimensions based on the original number of pixels and a new, lower resolution. Change the width to 6" or so. (The height will scale accordingly). Click OK. Now go to the Zoom control on the toolbar and select 100%. Look OK? If not, use Edit/Undo to undo the resize, and pick a different width. Lastly, select File/SaveAs, give it another new name so that it won't overwrite the hi-res original, and save it. If you click the "More" button then you can also select a lower or higher JPEG quality, but our experience is that the default "50" setting is a good compromise between file size and quality. To see the effect of the new resolution you need to re-open the saved picture in a new window, otherwise you are still looking at your original before JPEG compression. Now check the file size with Windows Explorer (don't forget View/Refresh if needed to update the display) and repeat the resizing if the file is still too big. Files between 10 and 20K are quite reasonable for sending via Pactor-2 which typically transfers 1-3K bytes per minute. Sending pictures via Pactor-1 is simply not practical. 73, Jim ke6rk
